Artist Statement
I am a collector of moments, marking my experiences through tangible objects. A weathered piece of wood or a smooth pebble are distinct forms that hold their own narratives. The negative spaces between trees and the way water shapes its surroundings become my visual catalog of form. These collections become the foundation in my approach to clay.
In my practice, I begin with basic handbuilt shapes, providing a uniform structure that can be added to. I use my hands and tools to explore tactility. Using small lumps of clay, I create textures that are built and layered in an endeavour to imitate flowers, outcroppings, or bubble gum. A once detached, impersonal canvas becomes a composition of nature. These compositions are comparable to a river cutting through a canopy or the skeletal architecture of a decomposing tree.
I rely on the clay to create texture, depth, complexity, and variety. Wood firing unifies the work, creating variation of color and texture, preserving a moment in time. The rough textures and ash deposits bear the imprint of my emotion.
